Pierre Koukjian
Born in Beirut in 1962, Pierre Koukjian demonstrated an early aptitude for visual expression. His childhood drawings earned recognition in competitions organised by the Italian embassy, establishing him as an early artistic talent. This formative period of creative development occurred in pre-war Lebanon, where his distinctive visual sensibility first emerged.
He departed Beirut in the late 1970s, catalysing an educational trajectory that took him to Germany in 1988. He pursued jewellery design and gemology studies there, establishing technical foundations that would later inform his broader sculptural practice. Pierre’s expertise quickly garnered attention from high-profile clients in Paris and prestigious international brands, beginning a career that would go beyond conventional disciplinary boundaries.
His professional journey took him across Europe, from Madrid to Geneva, where his practice evolved beyond jewellery to encompass sculpture and design. During this period, he created erotic sculptures for a private museum, further developing his mastery of detail and form that would become characteristic of his later work.
Pierre’s nomadic experiences, including time in Germany, France, Southeast Asia, Spain, and ultimately Switzerland, have profoundly influenced his artistic perspective. This transnational orientation facilitated his engagement with diverse cultural traditions and craft techniques, allowing him to synthesise elements from various artistic traditions into a distinctive creative approach.
He conceptualises design as an art form that shapes our environment, experiences, and emotional responses. With this philosophical framework, Pierre has developed a practice that defies categorisation, producing singular works that engage collectors and institutions worldwide. He has won multiple international awards in Japan, Switzerland, Italy and various other countries.
